The Future of HR with Carol Morrison of i4cp - Epic Living

The following is an interview I conducted with Carol Morrison of i4cp on the future of HR. A very compelling conversation we had.

Carol Morrison is a Senior Research Analyst. She has been with i4cp for eight years, researching and writing about the talent, strategy, and leadership issues that directly affect organizational performance. In addition, Carol has authored articles for Talent Management Magazine, Chief Learning Officer, HRPS Journal, Human Resource Executive, and other publications.

?

I?ve heard for some years that HR professionals desire a role that makes them more of a partner in the business enterprise. Is this desire becoming a reality? Are they moving the needle?

You?re absolutely right. This has been ? and continues to be ? an evolution for HR and the business partner role. i4cp?s interviews with CHROs and other top HR and business leaders confirm that many are shifting their HR functions toward greater efficiency in handling the transactional and administrative duties typically associated with HR. Technology is helping to enable that transition.

In turn, greater efficiency affords HR professionals more time to focus on the value they can provide to the business by helping to identify issues that impede productivity, by uncovering potential opportunities, and in working with business leaders to better leverage the contributions of the workforce. As i4cp?s recent study, The Future of HR: The Transition to Performance Advisor, underscores, the HR professional?s role is all about driving organizational performance and that?s unfolding in more companies today.

What traits/strengths should the HR professional of tomorrow possess?

Exploring competencies that the future HR professional will need is one of the core aspects of the i4cp study. Certainly, keen business savvy is the starting point for a business partner who can be a trusted and credible advisor to business leaders. It?s more than an understanding of basic financial statements and business models. It?s in-depth business acumen, along with such competencies as strategic thinking, the ability to develop and execute strategy, a strong sense of ethics, organizational design skills, comprehension of metrics and analytics, decision-making capabilities, and an understanding of technologies and information systems.

CHROs with whom we spoke told i4cp that HR performance advisors need to know how to ask the right questions to get at the issues important to the business. They need courage to speak up when it?s important to question the status quo, and the emotional intelligence that enables them to effectively function in volatile situations and to serve as confidantes when business leaders need reliable counsel.

How will the HR function stay relevant in the next 10 years?

By contributing those competencies just described. As long as organizations employ workforces, HR will be not only relevant, but crucial. Human capital generally represents an organization?s greatest investment and its greatest asset. If you are a leader who believes that employees and their contributions are key elements that drive innovation, differentiation, and competitive advantage, then there?s an important place in your organization for HR professionals who can help you optimize performance by ensuring that your workforce is appropriately trained, motivated, and deployed to execute your business strategies.

In some ways, HR is exploring the last frontier that holds promise for truly affecting business performance. The economic challenges of recent years have sharpened leaders? abilities to cut costs, streamline processes, and wring all they can from tangible organizational assets. There is tremendous power in the intangibles that employees bring: discretionary effort, creativity, tenacity, wide-ranging talents, and the desire to excel ? to name just a few. HR is the integral link in the performance chain ? the force for uncovering and developing that human capital potential.

On the whole, do most HR professionals understand the challenges ahead within the world of work?

Yes ? certainly as well as any of us can understand the challenges within our volatile business environment. HR professionals see the work world?s issues reflected in the faces of the employees and managers they serve every day. So long as HR professionals ? and those involved in every other business discipline ? remain curious, eager to learn, and engaged in moving their organizations ahead, they?ll rise to the challenges that come their way.

In fact, HR already may be ahead of the curve. HR professionals often are intimately involved in organizational change initiatives. Leading the way for change and helping employees and leaders, alike, adjust to it has afforded HR professionals years of opportunities to develop the agility and resilience to meet even unanticipated circumstances with solid skills and resolve.

In addition, the HR leaders who shared their views with i4cp made clear their investment in providing their promising talent with unprecedented development options. Often, these involve stretch assignments, job rotations, and specialized training that extends far beyond the boundaries of HR. That means HR professionals are learning about operations, finance, marketing, and other business functions, along with the challenges they face. They return to HR with expanded networks that cross functional lines and with a deeper understanding of the issues challenging employees and managers organization-wide.

How can entrepreneurs, who are building organizations, include HR in the vision and execution of business strategy?

By doing just that ? including them at the top level from the outset. Savvy executives know that HR leaders are valuable members of teams charged with developing business strategy. Leaving human capital considerations out of strategy formulation is an ill-informed approach that seriously jeopardizes execution. You wouldn?t leave out budget considerations when planning new business objectives. Nor would you ignore the technologies or equipment you?d need to accomplish your desired ends. Employees and their skills are an equally vital element. Strategies require execution, and that falls to managers and employees. In many companies, carefully crafted plans fail because leaders leave human capital considerations out of the strategy mix.

When i4cp researchers interviewed Larry Myers, SVP of HR at T-Mobile, he observed that ?companies that understand the impact that sophisticated, top-quality HR organizations and professionals can have, automatically gain strategic and business advantage. Their executive teams would not think of making a step strategically without involving HR.?

Successful entrepreneurs understand that ideas, resources, technologies, processes and people must be deftly melded in order to bring business goals to fruition. They include HR leaders in developing strategies to ensure that they?ve addressed all the elements necessary to capably executing those strategies.

Was the Regnerus Study on Gay Parenting Defective? | Crisis ...

      Mark Regnerus

In the July issue of the scholarly journal Social Science Research (SSR), Professor Mark Regnerus (pictured) published an article detailing initial results from his New Family Structures Study. His results suggested that adult children who had been raised, for at least a brief time, in families with a gay, lesbian, or bisexual parent were more likely to report dysfunctional adult outcomes than those who had been raised in other family structures, especially families with continuously married heterosexual parents.

In the same issue of the journal, three other scholars rendered comments on the NFSS results and Regnerus addressed their comments as well. His study raised a huge outcry of protest, which led, among other things, to the University of Texas conducting a preliminary investigation into the ethics of his study (he was cleared of any malfeasance). Subsequently, in the November issue of SSR, several scholars, including the editor of SSR and an auditor of the review process, rendered their verdicts on the study. Professor Regnerus also provided a revised analysis of the data, attempting to address some of the criticisms of his study.

How different was Regnerus?s method to that of other studies?
I also weighed in on the discussion with a commentary pointing out, as SSR editor Dr. James D. Wright noted, ?that many of the most controversial methodological and measurement decisions made in the Regnerus paper have well-established precedents in the larger social science literature.?

My approach was different than those of the other commentators, who were generally ?for? or ?against.? My main question was, ?How different was what Regnerus did methodologically compared to what other scholars have done in the past ten years when investigating similar issues?? I considered sample selection, sample size, definition of family forms, measurement of sexual orientation, statistical analysis, funding, and consistency of results with other research, citing over 110 examples of other previous research.

Space here does not permit me to detail all of my findings but I will discuss a few of my comments. While some have tried to vindicate the Regnerus study by citing my comments, my intent was not to laud the study but to place it in context relative to other social science research. The conclusion to be drawn may be ?similar methodological limitations? as much as anything.

      Criticisms would apply to others
      Use of Knowledge Networks data
. Regnerus was criticized, for example, for using Knowledge Networks (KN) for obtaining his sample. KN does not appear to conduct random national samples per se but provides a hired panel of respondents thought to compare favorably to the characteristics of a national random USA sample. For myself, I am concerned about turning over one?s data collection to another organization because you may not understand all of the small decisions (or errors) made in that complex process.

However, my search of the academic literature led to over 20 published studies that had used KN, including research by Professor Gregory Herek, an internationally renowned gay psychologist, as well as research sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a pro-gay advocacy group.

Thus, while I might be ?cool? towards the use of KN, it is clear that the research company has been used by a wide variety of scholars, who have had success getting published in leading journals with data drawn from its panels of respondents. Regnerus reported that his response rate was approximately 65%; in contrast, Herek?s research with KN featured a response rate of only 30%, apparently far lower.

Use of mixed orientation households (MOMs). Much has been made of the possibility that Regnerus succeeded in gathering data from children from mixed orientation marriages (MOMs). However, many other attempts to study GLB families have involved such marriages. One study, for example, featured 72% of children who had been born into a previous heterosexual marriage before joining a lesbian couple family at an average age of over 4 years. However, the results of such studies are heralded as showing us how well lesbian families are doing, even though they involve many of the same limitations vis-?-vis MOMs as Regnerus? NFSS study.

Funding issues. With respect to funding, many published studies have been funded by pro-gay advocacy groups and yet few report doubts about the influence of such funding on research outcomes; but since the NFSS was funded by conservative groups, such doubts are brought to the forefront.

Outcomes for children. There is considerable research?detailed in my commentary in SSR?that notes the instability of lesbian and gay parental relationships, the tendency of their children to be involved in substance abuse, and the tendency of such children to experiment with or adopt same-sex sexual behaviors or identities?results similar to those that Regnerus reported. In other words, at least some of Regnerus?s findings were very similar to results from many other studies from around the world.

      Reservations
Surely some will attempt to portray my comments as a whitewash, as if I agree with all of Regnerus?s methodological decisions. That is hardly the case.

First, I think that it would have been wise, especially once it became apparent that there were few very stable GLB families in the Knowledge Networks panel, to contract with a pro-gay research organization to collect data from at least 30, preferably 100 or more, stable same-sex families, to permit a more valid (although still limited because of possible selection effects) comparison with similarly stable heterosexual families.

Second, I think Regnerus should have reported a type of bracketing of his results?worst case, best case, and modal case?in his first article. However, in his first article, he presented a worst case analysis. In his second paper, he presented more of a modal case analysis. As far as I can tell, we have yet to see a detailed best case analysis.

Third, it is not clear to me that using average comparisons of outcomes for different family structural forms is the best approach for assessing the intertwined role of family structure and family process in the development of children. I hope to try some of my different ideas over the next few months to see what some of those better ways might be, if permitted by the characteristics of the data in the NFSS.

As my own review of other studies shows, however, the wholesale ad hominem attacks on Professor Regnerus and the complete dismissal of all of his methods and professionalism continue to be unjustified, even though his research?as all research?deserves careful scrutiny. His decisions about research design and analysis were within the ball park of what other credible and distinguished researchers have been doing within the past decade.

[Editor's Note: Dr. Schumm served as a paid consultant (6-7 days) in the early stages of the development of the New Family Structures Study (NFSS). Dr. Schumm presented each of the articles or comments related to the NFSS from Social Science Research in his assessment of the NFSS at a round table discussion at the National Council on Family Relation?s annual conference, November 2, Phoenix, Arizona.]

      Notes
      * ?Methodological decisions and the evaluation of possible effects of different family structures on children: the New Family Structures Survey (NFSS),? Social Science Research, Vol. 41(6): pages 1357-1366. (My apologies for the confusion between ?Survey? and ?Study? in the NFSS title).

Leonid Meteor Shower to Shine in Weekend Sky

The annual Leonid meteor shower reaches its peak this week and may get a boost from a moonless weekend sky.

The actual peak of the 2012 Leonid meteor shower is on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 3 a.m. EST, but, like all meteor showers, the celestial fireworks display will be visible for a few nights before and after that peak time, weather permitting. Because the moon will have set by that time, its bright glow won't wash out any Leonids you may see.

The Leonids are associated with the periodic comet Tempel-Tuttle, first discovered in 1865. This comet has a period of 33.2 years. It was last close to the sun in 1998 and will return in 2031. After Tempel-Tuttle's discovery, it was traced back to a comet observed in 1366.

Astronomers also realized that Tempel-Tuttle's last close approach to the sun was in 1833, which coincided with one of the greatest meteor storms in history. This was when they put two and two together, and realized that meteors had their origins in comets. [Amazing Leonid Meteor Shower Photos]

      Meteor showers explained

But what exactly is a meteor shower? Meteors are brief flashes of light in the Earth's upper atmosphere which occur when small pieces of interstellar material, called meteoroids, enter the atmosphere and heat it to incandescence. We don't actually see the meteoroids themselves, but rather the air heated by the friction of their passage.

As the Earth travels around the sun, it is constantly encountering meteoroids, so that on any night in the year, if you observe a dark sky after midnight, you will probably see a few meteors every hour. These are known as "sporadic meteors." [Leonid Meteor Lights Up Night Sky (Video)]

Meteoroids are not uniformly distributed in space. They seem to be most commonly produced when comets venture close to the sun, melting the ice from tiny comet fragments, leaving behind small meteoroids. Under the gravitational influence of the planets, these fragments gradually spread out along the comet's orbit, forming a belt of meteoroids in space. When the Earth passes through such a belt, we see more meteors than average, and this is known as a "meteor shower."

There is a common misconception that a meteor shower is like a rain shower, with large numbers of meteors being visible. Most meteor showers only involve a few more meteors per hour than you might see any night.

      Leonid meteor storms

On rare occasions, perhaps once a decade, observers see what are called meteor storms, when dozens of meteors can be seen every hour. The Leonid meteor shower is famous because it has caused a large number of meteor storms over the centuries.

Because the distribution of meteoroids along its parent comet Tempel-Tuttle's orbit is not uniform, it tends to produce meteor storms every 33 years, the same period as the comet. Careful observations have enabled mapping of clumps of meteoroids within the stream, leading to increasingly accurate predictions. There were spectacular Leonid storms in 1999, 2001, and 2002.

No meteor storm is predicted for 2012, but the Leonids can always be counted on to provide a good show, especially since there will be no moon to interfere with them this year.

      How to see the Leonids

The best time to observe meteors is always after midnight, when the Earth is heading directly into the meteor stream.

This shower is named the Leonids because they appear to radiate from a point just inside the Sickle of the constellation Leo. It's not important to know exactly where the radiant is because the longest and brightest meteors are usually about 90 degrees away from the radiant. The radiant will be roughly half way up the eastern sky for most northern observers, so the best directions to look are south, north, and directly overhead.

Although the peak is predicted for 3 a.m. EST Saturday morning, Leonids may be seen at any time in the night, and for a day or two before and after Saturday morning.

It's important to dress warmly and make yourself comfortable in a reclining garden or deck chair. You will see more meteors if you keep your head still and allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to become adapted to the dark. Be patient and spend a least an hour watching, as meteors often come in batches with long dry spells in between.

Try catching photographs of Leonids by setting your camera up on a tripod and making time exposures of at least 15 seconds, and send them along to us to share.

      Clear skies and good luck!

Editor's note:?If you and snap an amazing photo of the Leonid meteor shower and would like to share it with SPACE.com for a possible story or image gallery, send images, comments and location information to managing editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.

Get In the Spirit with Mulled Wine

It may still feel like summer at Ponte, but back east where I live, it?s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.? The leaves on my backyard trees are gone, the radiators are on and the air is cold.? Here it is, the beginning of November, and I have a crazy itch to put up my Christmas decorations.? It doesn?t help that every retailer known to man has had theirs up for weeks.? But, whenever I bring it up to my husband he says, ?After Thanksgiving, honey.??? So, alas, I wait.

Still, I need something to scratch this Christmas itch.? I think I?ve found the perfect solution in mulled wine.

Mulled wine is basically red wine warmed with spices. Traditional spices used are cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. ?It?s usually enjoyed during the holiday season and sometimes around Halloween.? Mulled wine can be found worldwide and it varies in every country. In Scandanavia, there?s Glogg where they add cardamom, ginger and bitter orange.? In France, it?s vin chaud and they add lemon.? In Bulgaria, it?s greyano vino and they add peppercorns.? In South Brazil, it?s vinho quente, and they add cacha?a.? In Romania, it?s vin fiert and they add apples. And on, and on.

Fortunately, I had a can of Williams-Sonoma mulling spices in my cupboard.? I?ve only ever used it to make mulled cider, but it can be used for wine just the same.? ?A ton of recipes can be found on the internet for mulled wine made from scratch, so a can of spices such as mine are not at all necessary.? Williams-Sonoma makes theirs with cinnamon, cloves, allspice berries and orange rind.? To make it, I simmered 4 cups of red wine (whatever kind you like; I used Cabernet Sauvignon), 1/3 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons of the mulling spices for about 20 minutes.? I removed the spices and served.? You can serve mulled wine in wine glasses, Irish coffee glasses, even coffee mugs, and you can garnish with all kinds of things, such as cinnamon sticks, orange or lemon wheels, apple slices, even mini candy canes.? And for you Californians who are still battling the heat, there is an option for you, too: Just chill the finished wine and serve over ice.

Truth be told, I?d still like to put up my tree, lights, and Christmas village, but at least now when I don?t think I can wait any longer, I know I can take the edge off with a glass of this delicious, spicy wine.? As I write this, there are only 11 days left until the day after Thanksgiving.? But who?s counting, anyway?

Looking for a warm, cozy place to enjoy the holidays this year? Try Ponte Vineyard Inn and enjoy the holidays (food, drink, laughter!) in wine country.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile USA receives its Jelly Bean update

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile

Sprint was the first major US carrier to start delivering Jelly Bean to Galaxy S III owners, but it no longer stands alone now that the T-Mobile edition is officially receiving its update. If you're part of the initial crop deemed eligible on Magenta's network, a check either over-the-air or through Kies should put Android 4.1.1 on the Samsung flagship. T-Mobile's version of the upgrade delivers the expected dashes of Google Now and Project Butter as well provider-specific fixes for WiFi calling. Don't worry if there isn't an immediate notice, as carrier-linked OS updates usually take weeks to get everyone on the same page; the main question is when all the other big US networks will follow suit.

Taiwan scandal linked to state stock investment

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Taiwanese authorities are investigating the operations of four state-owned funds that incurred huge losses on the local stock markets in the wake of a scandal involving one of them, the premier said Tuesday.

Premier Sean Chen said financial regulators are looking into massive stock transactions made with money from the funds to try to detect any irregularities. The funds lost a total of 90 billion New Taiwan dollars ($3.1 billion) in stock trading last year.

Last week, prosecutors accused a dealer of ING Securities ? a member of the ING Group ? of breach of trust in handling stock investments on behalf of a government labor pension fund.

It charged Hsieh Ching-liang of buying into a listed company's stock when its price was low via dummy accounts, and then using government money to artificially inflate the stock's price so he could make money on his original purchases.

Hsieh denied any wrongdoing, but ING Securities executives agreed to reimburse NT$200 million ($6.9 million) to the pension fund.

The Taiwan government has long used state funds to buoy lackluster markets to help "stabilize" share prices.

They normally make profits when prices later recover or surge.

Taiwan's stock market index has lost more than 3 percent over the past 12 months.

Weirdly human armadillo in samurai armour

      Rowan Hooper, news editor

      1st-0087_Armadillo_Crossing.jpg

(Images from Tim Flach's latest book, More than Human (Abrams))

I see this armadillo, in its close-fitting samurai armour, and think: cool animal. Then I see that it is raised on its front claws and think: furtive, scrabbling beast. Then I take in the pink ear and the long bristles, the marble eye, and I think: vulnerable animal.

It's no surprise that this shot of a southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus) has such a weirdly human quality. Photographer Tim Flach, who is based in London, is well known for the humanising quality he brings to his pictures.

"With the armadillo I just thought it looked cool - it was about the aesthetics of the animal," he says. "I knew it was the only species that can roll into a complete ball, that's why we wanted to shoot this one, to get the contrast."

The three bands that give this animal its name provide flexibility of movement and allow it to curl its head to its tail, protecting all soft areas from predators. That's part of the contrast Flach is interested in. The southern three-banded armadillo can protect itself pretty well in a ball of armour, but it is nevertheless a near-threatened species: its habitat is being converted to farmland, and it is hunted for the pet trade and for food. "We like to use the aesthetic of these beautiful images to engage the viewer, to bring the viewer to the debate," Flach says.

Who is going to dominate the internet? ? BuddeBlog

While the internet has brought about the transformation of whole industry sectors and generated thousands of business models, as well as changing social behaviour, it is at the same time creating its own giants and dominant players.

Does this mean that while certain vested interests are demolished, and others transform themselves into smaller sectors and organisations, new conglomerates will surface? Only time will tell.

There is no doubt that the internet has established a much larger and more level playing field, and that it has made it possible for others to take market share and revenue away from traditional players. It seems unlikely that there will be a return to the days before the internet; and so in general terms the outlook for a much more open and competitive market place remains optimistic.

It was interesting to see how, a decade or so ago, some of those vested interests in the telecoms and media world tried to copy their traditional business models over to the online environment. They simply tried to create another walled garden business for their businesses, this time on the Net. Most of the telcos set up their internet shopping malls and later on the mobile operators did the same with their portals; we saw media companies set up their e-magazines with shopping malls. However these walled gardens were not popular with their customers ?and most simply jumped over the wall onto the free and open internet.

As BuddeComm predicted in the late 1990s, a more successful model would be to establish vertical portals, with very deep content. Several of these highly specialised sites are still operating around the world, some based on language differences; others on niche markets, unique products and services, special interests, etc; and the number of such ?long tail? sites continue to grow.

Based on this vertical portal concept we saw very interesting further developments led by Amazon ? perhaps the single best shopping experience on the Net, now with a vast range of products.

Google took a similar approach. Originally just a search engine it moved vertically into maps, social networking and mail.

Apple?s iTunes is by far the largest music store anywhere in the world. It dominates the music industry and, like Amazon, is now venturing into a range of other online products.

Facebook is another online giant dominating the social media scene, from where it also is venturing into a whole new range of advertising-based applications.

These companies have finetuned customer interaction on very user-friendly open systems and due to their sheer size they are able to attract new products and services to their platforms, forever increasing their reach, size and power and thus further consolidating companies and services on the internet.

Obviously the hundreds of thousands of other internet-based services are not going to go away, but at least for the moment it looks as though a handful of giants are dominating a significant percentage of internet activity.

At the same time the enormous volume of services plays into the hands of the larger ones, as they are able to offer a one-stop experience, with easy to find products, services and applications, based on user-friendly platforms that customers are familiar with. There is no doubt that these companies will continue to make it as easy as possible for customers to use more and more services. And as the internet adds its next billion users, so will these giants grow alongside it.

The power of these companies becomes even more apparent when looking at Google. Their future depends heavily on people having access to very high-quality broadband, and in order to stimulate the development of infrastructure for such services Google even moved into investing in submarine cables, FttH networks and WiFi networks. For a similar reason it bought Motorola, simply to get access to patents that would allow it to improve its online businesses and to ensure that mobile devices will be able to access its services seamlessly.

Another sign of the power of these companies is linked to so-called ?big data?. By having access to as much data as possible in relation to customers, their behaviour, interests, jobs and so on, these companies are able to offer unique advertising products. While in general there is nothing inherently wrong with this, these companies do need to be very careful with that data as it borders on areas such as privacy and security and could therefore easily become a target for government regulations. In particular, the massive amount of data on literally hundreds of millions of customers makes these companies very powerful indeed ? to put this into perspective, all of these companies individually know more about the citizens than the governments of the countries where the people live.

BuddeComm has been arguing for over a decade that these companies, as well as everybody else collecting and storing personal data, should only be able to do so on a permission basis. The person whose data they collect should ultimately ?own? their own data, giving companies permission to use that data for certain purposes. While this will not necessarily change the overall nature of ?big data? it will place the control of it in the hands of the user, not the company.

Do You Have Drive? [VIDEO] - hypebot

Light,,,path,light,sunset,lighting,nature-41f773f8f24c6fffefc6516030b7503b_hAbout a year ago, I wrote an article entitled ?Musicians: Remember to Start with Why? that spoke about defining the intrinsic motivation behind your music career. The piece spoke about the differences between ?work? and ?effort?, and challenged readers to really consider why they are choosing to pursue one of the most difficult ways to make a living these days ? to examine their inner drive. ?

DRIVE is a short documentary that explores what we have within us, why do we do what we do, and what it takes to get "there". The short features seasoned music industry veteran and growth expert Gian Fiero and entertainment attorney Michael Ashburne (Richard Pryor, Donny Hathaway, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Dead Kennedys, and more) as they discuss their journey to career success and how they made "doing what you love" into a work of art.

Meaningful Mama: Day #314 Tip - Slow Down

Meaningful Mama: Day #314 Tip - Slow Down

Day #314 Tip - Slow Down

This post is 100% for me right now. I admit it. It is a selfish post and a reminder I need. I'm generally pretty good at saying "no" when I don't want to do something and even when I feel over committed. However, I haven't been very good at it lately. Opportunities have come up that seem reasonable and fun. They are low commitment. They are often a way for me to serve others but also things I enjoy. This week felt absolutely crazy to me though. I was going non-stop, and there was no time left over for even my sweet husband who had to and did have a lot of grace with me. When other things, even good things, start pushing out my family then I'm doing something wrong. They were good things - volunteering in Abby's class, going to a meeting about making the school more family friendly, PTA meeting (a PTA meeting that I made lemon tartlets for but actually had the wrong date and the PTA meeting wasn't even going on...Can I tell you how tempted I was to sit in my car, listen to Norah Jones and eat a plateful of lemon tartlets My conscious and fear for my waistline prevented that), small group & making meals for some struggling families, helping with decorations for our church baby shower, decorating a giving bin for Care Net, going LIVE on Google+ Hangouts?and the prep for that, normal blog stuff, watching a friend's three kids, Moms in Prayer Group, Bible Study...it was a crazy week. How could I possibly serve my own family well when all of my energy is going elsewhere? How could I possible make decent meals? Is there a reason my house is a disaster right now? We are often a go, go society, and we often forget to take time for the relationships that matter the most - namely God, husband, family and friends in that order. My encouragement, to me and you, is to slow down.Pin It

EU officials: We were hacked at Web conference

      19 hrs.

A European official says her staff members were hacked when they joined her for a conference on Internet security in Azerbaijan.

European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said in a blog post Saturday that her advisers' computers were compromised as they attended a meeting of the Internet Governance Forum in the Azeri capital of Baku.

Her spokesman Ryan Heath told The Associated Press that the attack occurred while they were in their hotel. He declined to say who might be responsible, adding that the computers would be analyzed for clues.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the attack resulted in theft of any information.

Kroes criticized her hosts during the forum Wednesday, attacking the Azeri government for allegedly spying on activists online and "violating the privacy of journalists and their sources."

Macedonian minister looking for certified geniuses

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) ? Macedonia's health minister is looking for assistants ? but they have to be certified geniuses.

Nikola Todorov's ministry announced Thursday that it needs seven to 10 advisers, to consult once or twice a month for a daily fee of 3,000 to 5,000 denars (?50-80, $64-100).

The announcement said successful candidates must possess an IQ score of at least 140, certified by the Mensa International IQ society. They also must have a university degree and speak at least two foreign languages.

Macedonian public servants are not normally required to take IQ tests, but Todorov can be demanding. He recently angered state doctors by linking their salaries with the number of patients they treat.

The average intelligence quotient is 90 to 110. Above 140, people are considered geniuses.

Strikeforce returns with stacked card, includes Gilbert Melendez and Daniel Cormier

      Strikeforce is back!

Well, they are with at least one show. When they canceled their second straight show in October, they promised a "stacked card." The idea was to make up for the two missed cards in September and November. Well, they have delivered.

MMA Junkie is reporting the fights are set for January 12 in Oklahoma City, where the ill-fated Nov. 3 event was supposed to happen. The line-up is:

-- Gilbert Melendez defending the lightweight belt against Pat Healy
-- Heavyweight grand prix winner Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring
-- Middleweight champ Luke Rockhold fighting Lorenz Larkin
-- Nate Marquardt's first defense of his welterweight belt against Tarec Saffiediene

Not bad, right? Every men's belt that has someone holding it will be defended. The big question is will this be Strikeforce's going away party, as they have struggled late in 2012. The promotion, owned by the same parent company as the UFC, would easily be folded into the UFC. However, they still have a contract with Showtime to provide fights. The promotion could still hang on.

How Can I Oppose Same-Sex Marriage When Someone I Love Is ...

By Regina Griggs and Peter Sprigg , Christian Post

Increasingly, advocates of same-sex marriage are abandoning legalistic arguments about ?equality? and ?civil rights,? and appealing to emotion and personal relationships instead. ?We (gays and lesbians) are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers, your classmates and your relatives,? the argument goes. ?If you respect and care about us, how can you deny us what we want?? (namely, to have their same-sex relationships affirmed by the state through marriage licenses).

Polls suggest this approach is having an effect. People who know someone who self-identifies as ?gay? or ?lesbian? are more likely to support the redefinition of marriage than people who do not.

Is this connection a logical one? We argue it is not. How a person feels about their personal relationship with a gay friend, acquaintance, or relative should not dictate their position on the public policy issue of whether to change the definition of marriage.

We are both affiliated with Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), which spreads the truth that it is possible for sexual orientation to change, and defends the civil rights of ex-gays. Note, however, that the title of our organization includes the phrase, ?and Gays.? Many of those who look to PFOX for support are parents and/or friends of people who still self-identify as ?gay? and engage in homosexual relationships. This is true of us personally as well. One of us (Regina) has an adult child who is openly gay. Peter and his wife have relatives and family friends who are gay as well.

Roasted root vegetables and pearled barley soup - Healthy Food ...

      Slide1

After Superstorm Sandy (I hope you all have power, and are safe and warm!) and a stormy election season, I thought it would be nice to share a comforting, earthy soup.

Root vegetables become magical when they meet the high heat of the oven. They develop caramelized and mellow flavors, and are so much richer. This soup is the perfect little meal on a cold day.

      Ingredients:

      • 2 sweet potatoes, diced
      • 4 potatoes, diced
      • 5 carrots, diced
      • 2 parsnips, diced
      • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
      • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
      • 1 large yellow onion, diced
      • 8 cups vegetable stock
      • 1 teaspoon paprika
      • 1 teaspoon dried dill
      • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
      • 1 cup pearled barley
      • Salt and pepper to taste
      • 1 cup parsley, finely chopped

      Preparation:

      • Preheat oven to 400?F (200?C)
      • In a large baking sheet, toss sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots and parsnips with 2 tablespoons olive oil, honey, and some salt and pepper
      • Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring the veggies occasionally, until the vegetables are soft but still chewy and slightly caramelized
      • In a large pot, over high heat saut? the onion and the 1 tablespoon of olive oil until golden
      • Add the roasted vegetables, vegetable stock, paprika, dill, tomato paste, pearled barley and some salt and pepper, cover the pot, and bring to a boil
      • Reduce heat to a simmer and continue cooking until the barley is soft (about 20-30 minutes)
      • Add the parsley and correct seasoning

This soup is now ready to serve, but will taste even better the day after, and will keep in the fridge for 5 days.

      Yield: serves many (10-12 easy).

      Enjoy,

      Dr. Ayala

Starchy, high carbohydrate diet associated with recurrence of colon cancer

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Colon cancer survivors whose diet is heavy in complex sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods are far more likely to have a recurrence of the disease than are patients who eat a better balance of foods, a new study by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute researchers indicates.

The connection is especially strong in patients who are overweight or obese, the authors write. More than 1,000 patients with advanced (stage III) colon cancer participated in the study, one of the first to examine how diet can affect the chances that the disease will recur.

The findings are being published online by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and will appear later in the journal's print edition.

Although the results point to a potential hazard, for colon cancer patients, of a high-carbohydrate diet, the take-home message is not a conclusive "Eat less sugar," said lead author Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD, MPH. "Our study certainly supports the idea that diet can impact the progression of colon cancer, and that patients and their doctors should consider this when making post-treatment plans. But further research is needed to confirm our findings."

Recent studies have shown that colorectal cancer survivors whose diet and activity patterns lead to excess amounts of insulin in the blood have a higher risk of cancer recurrence and death from the disease. High insulin levels can be produced by eating too many starchy and sugar-laden foods. In a previous study of advanced-stage colon cancer patients, Meyerhardt and his colleagues found that those with a typical "Western" diet -- marked by high intakes of meat, fat, refined grains, and sugar desserts -- were three times more likely to have a cancer recurrence than those whose diets were least Western. The new study was conducted to explore which component of the Western diet is most responsible for the increased risk of recurrence.

The study involved 1,011 stage III colon cancer patients who had undergone surgery and participated in a National Cancer Institute-sponsored Cancer and Leukemia Group B clinical trial of follow-up chemotherapy for their disease. Participants reported their dietary intake during and six months after the trial.

Researchers tracked the patients' total carbohydrates, as well as their glycemic index (a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels rise after eating a particular food), and glycemic load (which takes into account the amount of a carbohydrate actually consumed), and looked for a statistical connection between these measures and the recurrence of colon cancer.

They found that participants with the highest dietary levels of glycemic load and carbohydrate intake had an 80 percent increased risk of colon cancer recurrence or death compared with those who had the lowest levels. Among patients who were overweight or obese (had a body mass index above 25 kg/m2), the increase was even greater.

"In light of our and other's research, we theorize that factors including a high glycemic load may stimulate the body's production of insulin," Meyerhardt said. "That, in turn, may increase the proliferation of cells and prevent the natural cell-death process in cancer cells that have metastasized from their original site."

Meyerhardt added that while the study doesn't prove that diets high in glycemic load and carbohydrate intake cause recurrence of colon cancer, the results strongly suggest that such dietary factors play a role. "Our findings may offer useful guidance for patients and physicians in ways of improving patient survival after treatment."

Warren sees room for compromise on deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Newly elected Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren says she'll go to Washington believing there is a "lot of room for compromise" on the most pressing issue facing Congress: What to do about the deficit and the impending fiscal crisis.

Warren, a Democrat and leading consumer advocate, tells NBC's "Today" that Congress can find a middle ground to bring down the deficit by cutting spending while raising revenues.

In a separate interview on "CBS This Morning," Warren said those who voted for her opponent, Republican Sen. Scott Brown, sent a message that people want lawmakers to work together. She says: "I heard that loud and clear."

Warren defeated Brown, who scored a dramatic victory in strongly Democratic Massachusetts in 2010 by capturing the seat held by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
