Senate adjourns as "fiscal cliff" talks continue

DUBAI (Reuters) - A small U.S. commercial plane has been stuck in Iran for nearly three weeks after making an emergency landing near the city of Ahvaz, the country's airports director said on Sunday. The plane was forced to land because of technical problems, Mahmoud Rasoulinejad said, quoted by the Mehr news agency. "After landing, the crew traveled on to countries around the Persian Gulf and the plane is currently being repaired," he said. Rasoulinejad did not specify who owned the aircraft, where it was headed or the nationality of the crew members. ...

Pakistan: Cough syrup suspected in 33 deaths

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) ? Authorities are investigating cough syrup believed to have killed 33 people in eastern Pakistan in the past three days, a government official said Saturday, the second time in recent months that suspect medicine is thought to have caused multiple deaths.

Also Saturday, an explosion ripped through a passenger bus while it was at a terminal in the southern city of Karachi, killing four people and wounding 40 others, police and hospital officials said. It's unclear if the blast was caused by a bomb or a gas cylinder exploding.

The deaths from the cough syrup occurred in Gujranwala and villages surrounding the city, said Abdul Jabbar Shaheen, the top administrative official in Gujranwala. Another 54 people are being treated at hospitals in the city who are also believed to have consumed the syrup. Those involved are thought to be laborers or drug addicts who drank the syrup to get high, said Shaheen.

Chemical samples collected from the victims' stomachs contained dextromethorphan, a synthetic morphine derivative used in cough syrup that can have mind-altering effects if consumed in large quantities, said Shaheen. It is being investigated whether the people affected by the syrup in Gujranwala drank too much of it, or whether there was a problem with the medicine itself, he said.

Twenty-three people died in the nearby city of Lahore in November after drinking bad cough syrup sold under the brand name Tyno. They were also described at the time as people who consumed the drug to get high.

Shaheen said the cough syrup involved in the incidents in and around Gujranwala was not sold under a single brand. He said there were some people in the city involved in the business of making cough syrup specifically to sell to drug addicts, and officials were trying to arrest the culprits.

Officials temporarily closed one Lahore-based pharmaceutical company whose cough syrup was found in the possession of some of those affected in Gujranwala and were investigating whether it caused any of the deaths, said Shaheen.

The blast that ripped through the bus in Karachi on Saturday set the vehicle on fire and reduced it to little more than a charred skeleton. Police were trying to determine whether the explosion was caused by a bomb or a gas cylinder, said police spokesman Imran Shaukat. Many buses in Pakistan run on natural gas.

The explosion killed at least four people and wounded 40 others, some of whom were in critical condition, said Seemi Jamali, a doctor at the hospital in Karachi where they were being treated.

Karachi has a long history of political, ethnic and sectarian violence. It is also believed to be home to many Taliban militants who have fled U.S. drone attacks and Pakistani army operations in the country's northwest.

All eyes on them, Senate leaders seek fiscal deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate leaders rushed to assemble a last-ditch agreement to avoid middle-class tax increases and possibly delay steep spending cuts in an urgent attempt to find common ground after weeks of postelection gridlock.

An impatient President Barack Obama pressed top lawmakers to cut a deal, even one that falls short of the ambitions he and congressional leaders may once have harbored for a bigger deficit reduction package. Without a resolution, he warned, "every American's paycheck will get a lot smaller."

"Congress can prevent it from happening, if they act now," he said in his weekly Saturday radio and internet address.

Following a White House meeting Friday among Obama and congressional leaders, aides to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., began racing against the clock for a bipartisan bargain. The leaders could present legislation to senators as early as Sunday, with a vote possible on Sunday or Monday.

The guest list for the White House meeting included Reid, McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. But the key players were clearly Reid and McConnell, both of whom stayed behind briefly at the White House and huddled with their staffs and Obama's top legislative aide, Rob Nabors, in the West Wing Cabinet Room just outside the Oval Office.

Neither side expected compromise to be easy. However, McConnell and Reid voiced unexpected optimism that they could work toward a deal that could win support in both their camps.

Warned Reid: "Whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect."

Looking to add pressure on negotiators, Obama said that absent a compromise he expects Reid to put legislation on the floor to prevent tax increases on the middle class and extend unemployment benefits ? an implicit challenge to Republicans to dare to vote against what polls show is popular.

Speaking for Republicans in a Saturday radio address, Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri sought to put the burden of a deal on Obama and Reid.

"We still can avoid going over the fiscal cliff if the president and the Democrat-controlled Senate step forward this week and work with Republicans to solve this problem and solve it now," he said.

Whatever manages to pass in the Senate, with its Democratic majority, would then face a second test in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner, a Republican speaker who has struggled recently with anti-tax rebels inside his own party, said through an aide that he would await the results of the talks between the Senate and White House. A House vote could come as late as Wednesday, the final full day before a new Congress takes office.

Officials said there was a general understanding that any agreement would block scheduled income tax increases for middle-class earners while letting rates rise at upper-income levels.

Obama was sticking to his campaign call for increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000.

The two sides also confronted a divide over estate taxes. Obama favors a higher tax than is currently in effect, but one senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said he's "totally dead set" against it. Speaking of fellow GOP lawmakers, he said they harbor more opposition to an increase in the estate tax than to letting taxes on income and investments rise at upper levels.

But the estate tax was more likely to be used as a possible bargaining chip that Democrats could give away in exchange for higher rates for top earners and other Obama priorities.

Obama and Democrats want to prevent the expiration of unemployment benefits for about 2 million long-term jobless men and women, and there is widespread sentiment in both parties to shelter doctors from a 27 percent cut in Medicare fees.

Also likely to be included in the negotiations are taxes on dividends and capital gains, both of which are scheduled to rise with the new year. Also the alternative minimum tax, which, if left unchanged, could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time and mean an average increase of more than $3,000.

The White House has shown increased concern about a possible doubling of milk prices if a farm bill is not passed in the next few days, although it is not clear whether that issue too might be included in the talks.

One Republican who was briefed on the White House meeting said Boehner made it clear he would leave in place spending cuts scheduled to take effect unless alternative savings were included in any compromise to offset them. In previous White House proposals, Obama has suggested finding enough cuts in government spending to put off the steeper cuts for up to six months.

Obama, speaking to reporters following his meeting with the congressional leaders, faulted a system that left crucial decisions to the last minute, a way of governing that he said the public finds "mindboggling."

"Outside of Washington nobody understands how it is that this seems to be a repeat pattern, over and over again," he said.

Still, Obama himself is part of the negotiating process, and his meeting with all four top leaders Friday was the first since Nov. 16. A phone call he placed Wednesday night to McConnell was the first the Republican leader had received from a Democrat on the fiscal talks since Thanksgiving.

Looking to add pressure on negotiators, Obama said he expects Reid to put legislation on the floor to prevent tax increases on the middle class and extend unemployment benefits ? an implicit challenge to Republicans to dare to vote against what polls show is popular.

The start of negotiations in the Senate marked a new endgame for discussions that have moved in fits and starts since the November election.

Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.

Last week, the Ohio Republican presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners, well above Obama's latest offer for a $400,000 threshold.

Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid.

Camila Alves & Matthew McConaughey Welcome A Baby Girl!

Christmas was extended for?Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey who welcomed their third child, a girl on Friday. That is right the?McConaughey’s ended 2012 with a brand new addition to their family. People magazine broke the story that Matthew and his wife of less than a year have become parents for the third time. Their daughter was born yesterday morning in Austin Texas. Details of the new bundle of joy’s arrival and even her name are being kept private for now. The actor who is pretty good about keeping his private life private and his baby mama are keeping the deats of their baby girl to themselves, for now at least. I am sure at some point a reputable magazine will showcase the family with their baby girl, hopefully by then Matthew and Camila will have released at least the baby’s name. The little girl joins big brother Levi, age 4 and big sister Vida, age 2. It has been quite the year for McConaughey who not only wed Alves earlier this year in a lavish but totally Southern wedding at their Austin, Texas home but has also dropped some serious weight for his new role in the?upcoming movie ?The Dallas [...]

Chicago PMI Employment Index - Business Insider

Earlier this morning, we learned that the Chicago PMI climbed to 51.6 in December.? This was slightly ahead of economists expectations.

The gain was largely driven by a jump in the new orders sub-index.

However, the employment index collapsed to a three-year low.

Should we be worried?

TD Securities' Eric Green thinks we should take a deep breath and think about what happened.

"That may look worse than it really is, however," he writes. "The drop in employment reflects the prior weakness in new orders in November and to a lesser degree owing to the fiscal cliff which breeds well understood uncertainty."

Indeed, the exact opposite of what happened in this month's employment index could happen in an upcoming month.

"With the bounce back in new orders, employment will also bounce back, and ultimately everything flows from new orders which is now comfortably back above its 6m average of 50.8," writes Green. "Fade the weakness in employment and treat the release in much the same way as the headline would suggest which is better, not worse."

E-mail Marketing And You - Internet Marketing Training Blog

You have seen marketing with email at some point if you use an email address. Marketing with email is good for marketing to customers that may be interested in your business as well as ones that are already customers. This article has some tips to help you make the most of marketing emails for your business.

Send out personalized emails to your customers. Also, let them know about promotions or sales. If you can, send them promotions for new products based on the products they purchased in the past. A customer who has already trusted you for an initial purchase is more likely to continue buying merchandise from you.

Personalize the messages you send in your email campaigns. Customers will respond more positively to such messages rather than all the ones that are bland or impersonal. If your message is sent by the President, CEO or other company bigwig, it will have a bigger impact on your customers.

Be sure that you provide people with a way to opt out of your email marketing newsletters. Even though sending emails is basically free, they can still take money out of your pocket. You?ll also damage your reputation, causing your profits to reduce and potential backlash such as appearing on an email blacklist.

Harness all of the resources available to teach yourself about marketing via email strategies. Books on the subject may be available in libraries and online. Some areas even offer classes to help you improve your knowledge.

Don?t just use subscription information to target your emails; put it to work in making the service you offer your customers more convenient, too. If a customer uses an email link to visit your site, use their subscription information to pre-fill as much of the purchase form as possible. That makes the sales process run more easily, and makes people more likely to make a purchase.

If you will be including images in your emails, it can be good advantage to use Alt tags. In case the images are not loading properly, the alt tags will appear instead. The tags? descriptions should be relevant to the picture in order for the recipient to see its purpose. Also use tags on your links.

Branding your e-mail marketing in a similar fashion to your other marketing endeavors will ensure your customers instantly recognize your content. Design a great template that will enable you to show off your company?s logo, along with any special colors or fonts that you display prominently on your business?s website. This will allow your emails to be recognized instantly.

Only send your emails to clients and people that you know. Your emails will appear to be spam to those who are unfamiliar with your company. They?ll consider your email spam, defeating your marketing strategy. Their lack of care towards you and your business will most likely cause them to just mark it as spam, which just made your effort pointless.

Before getting involved in an marketing via email effort, you must obtain permission to email each person on your list. If you don?t, clients may leave or complain about your spamming.

You should not use images to convey your most important information. Many email clients won?t display images right away. This can make your messages ugly or even unreadable if they are too reliant on images. Always use clear text for the most important information you want to convey, and use descriptive alt tags for any images that you do use.

Almost everyone online knows what email promoting is, because it?s been around for as long as the Internet. For all intents and purposes, e-mail marketing is basically a medium in which businesses market to prospects via the email medium. It can be quite effective when used correctly, which can be quite easy to do if you apply the tips that have been listed in this article.

Book Challenges Kids With Science-Based Mysteries

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. Did you get a box set of "CSI" videos for the holidays, you know, the show with the magical blue light that analyzes all the clues? Any enhanced photo software photo thingie that makes impossibly blurry pictures clear again? That's my favorite, how they can magnify something, and it just suddenly fills in all those little pixels.

If this only-on-television sort of sleuthing is not for you, where they solve a horrible crime in an hour, how about a more cerebral kind of game, where you can solve a crime in a minute? Presented for your consideration, short mysteries for kids you can solve with a little logic and some science knowledge.

Want to give it a try? Our number 1-800-989-8255. Give us a call, and you can talk about it with my guest. Eric Yoder is a report with the Washington Post, his day job, but he's also co-author with his daughter Natalie Yoder of the book "One Minute Mysteries: 65 More Short Mysteries You Solve With Science!" Just published, they're both with us today. Welcome back. Happy holidays.

ERIC YODER: Thank you.

NATALIE YODER: Thank you, hello.

YODER: And thank you for having us.

FLATOW: You're going gangbusters with this series. I guess it must be well-accepted, Emily(ph) - I mean Natalie. I'm sorry.

(LAUGHTER)

YODER: It's OK. Yeah, they're doing very well. This is our third book. The first two were written when I was a middle school and high school, and now I'm a college student. So we've seen these books grow, and apparently everyone likes them.

FLATOW: Now do you start with a concept you want to get across and then write sort of backwards to come up with a story?

YODER: For some of them we find a common science fact or misconception, and then we build a story around them. But some of them are just problems that we see in daily life, and we decide to make them a story.

FLATOW: 1-800-989-8255 if our number, if you'd like to play along with us, and I'll read one or two if I can get the time for it of 65 more short mysteries, and maybe you can answer the question or solve the mystery of how somebody knew that. And I like the way the book has always been set up. You have the mystery on one page, and then you turn over the leaf, and you see the answer to the mystery on the next page.

YODER: Yes, we tried to do that so there's kind of an immediate reward, especially for children, rather than for example putting all the answers in the back of the book and making them fish around for them. We find that kids like to read several in sequence, and just having them page after page like that I think really encourages them to keep reading.

FLATOW: Natalie, as you say, when we first met you back in 2009, you were in high school. And now you're off at college. Are you going to be studying literature and writing or move on to something...?

YODER: I'm actually a sophomore at Penn State. I'm studying communications and political science. But I am taking writing-intensive classes, and in the future I would like to do writing for PR or marketing. So this has definitely helped.

FLATOW: Political science you think will be helpful?

YODER: Yes.

(LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: OK. That was one of the favorite subjects when I was in college many years ago, but that's good. And are the books actually being well received? You say you're selling a lot of them. But do you know if they're being received in high schools or middle schools? Are kids being introduced to them through classes in schools at all?

YODER: Yes, we've heard from many, many teachers both directly and through comments sent to the publisher that teachers like to use them to reinforce what they're teaching in the classroom. Sometimes they use them as homework assignments, sometimes as warm-up assignments during the class period or as maybe extra-credit assignments.

And we have just heard so many teachers tell us that they really, really find them valuable as a real-life way to reinforce what they're trying to get across in the classroom.

FLATOW: All right, I have a couple of contestants. I think it's Dante(ph) and Erica(ph) in Nashville. Hi, welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

DANTE: Hello.

ERICA: Hi.

FLATOW: Hey there. OK, are you ready to listen to the story, the mystery, and maybe solve it for us?

DANTE: We're ready.

FLATOW: OK, here it goes: Ivan's father had bought a new smoke detector six months earlier, putting each one of them on each level of their house, one in the laundry room downstairs, one in the sunroom on the main level, one in the upstairs hall between the bedrooms.

The smoke detectors sent wireless signals to an alarm system. Ivan's father had asked him to replace the batteries and looked surprise when Ivan brought the smoke detectors to him, where he was working at his tool bench in the garage; that was where they kept the fresh batteries.

You didn't have to take them off their bases, his father said. You could have just taken the new batteries, opened each smoke detector where it was and switched the batteries there. Sorry, I guess I didn't understand what you meant, Ivan said. Can't we just change them here? Well, to do that sure, but we have to put each smoke detector back in the same place, or the alarm system won't work right, his father said.

They're - and they're all the same except that the color of one is more faded than the others, and one has dark spots. At least that tells us what we need to know, doesn't it, Ivan asked? And so I guess the question is: How do they know where to put them back? Dante and Erica, where do they know how to put them, or which one goes to where? Any answers to that?

(LAUGHTER)

DANTE: The one that was in the - it was in the sunroom...

FLATOW: One in the sunroom, one in the upstairs hall.

DANTE: That one's going to be duller, the color will be duller, or faded I guess.

FLATOW: Yeah, you got that. Let me go - let me read - that's very good. Let me go to the answer page. It says: the faded one must be the one from the sunroom, the brightest of the places, Ivan said, setting aside the one with the lighter color. And the dark spots on this one are mildew, meaning it must have come from a damp, dark place, the laundry room. That leaves the other one for the upstairs hall.

DANTE: Very good. Thank you.

FLATOW: Did you - do you study science in school, Dante, was...?

DANTE: I'm a third-year medical student, and my wife is a biology teacher.

FLATOW: Is that you, Erica?

ERICA: Yes.

FLATOW: Did your training help, you think, solve these problems?

ERICA: No.

(LAUGHTER)

ERICA: Common sense.

FLATOW: Just common sense. Well, thank you for playing along with us. I wish we had a prize to give you, but we don't.

ERICA: Thank you.

DANTE: Thank you.

FLATOW: Just the knowledge that you helped the rest of America solve the problem. Have a happy new year to you both.

DANTE: You guys, too, bye.

FLATOW: Bye. Is that typical of how it works?

YODER: Yes, some of them are set up kind of as the classic mystery story, where it must be one of these three things that happened or, you know, in whodunit terms, it must have been one of those three people who did it. And so you use your scientific understanding to, you know, eliminate possibilities and to, you know, match up causes and effects.

FLATOW: So you must be already thinking about the next book you'd like to take on. Do you think about making each one topical, different topics, or do you mix them all up in the book?

YODER: We mix them up depending on where we get the ideas. We have kept a folder of ideas just working on it over the last several years. And so the first book was of science stories. The second book, of course, was stories based on more mathematical principles, and of course this one is science again. So it is a little easier to get science-based stories and ideas because there's just so much of science around us in everyday life.

FLATOW: So you - Natalie, do you come up with ideas from things you see on TV or where?

YODER: Some of them are from things we see on TV, but a lot of the concepts, again, come from daily life. And some of them are just facts that I learned in school or we've encountered at home or on family vacations. And science is all around us. So is concepts in math. And sometimes you just have to look into things and find the mystery within them.

FLATOW: There you go. Let me see if I have time for one more to read. Let's go to John(ph) in Atlanta. Hi John.

JOHN: Hi, how are you doing?

FLATOW: All right, ready to play? Here I go.

JOHN: Yeah, I'll give it a shot.

FLATOW: Hey, I had an old picture up of my grandma looking just like that, only it wasn't a costume to her, Cassandra said, as Ingrid walked into the homeroom. She said they actually thought you look cool. Their school normally had a dress code, but it was Halloween, and everyone had come in that day wearing costumes. Ingrid was dressed like a hippie. She had a tie-dyed shirt, beads, sandals and sunglasses with orange lenses shaped like hearts.

Ingrid took off the sunglasses for class, but she put them back on when it was time to get ready for the Halloween party in the afternoon. The class was decorating the classroom and painting signs for the school parade. Kahn, who thought he was funny, was hanging decorations upside-down. Preston was pretending to sword-fight in his pirate costume with a paintbrush. And Ricky was playing with fake blood after putting some on his zombie costume.

When it was almost time for the parade, Cassandra noticed that one of the signs had been decorated with a red, rather than an orange pumpkin. OK, who's the joker here, Cassandra asked? John, do you have any guesses, and reason it out with us.

JOHN: Right, well, I would guess that the person who painted the pumpkin red was the person who was wearing orange sunglasses because that changed the way she saw the light. Was that Ingrid as the hippie?

FLATOW: Well, let's go to the answer page. Flip over - or there is a picture of someone wearing sunglasses. She looked around the room for a guilty face. I see now, Cassandra said, it's your orange-colored sunglasses, Ingrid. They make everything look the same color to you. They're acting as filters, so the light of only one or some colors come through to your eyes, but other colors are blocked. What you thought was orange paint is actually red. Take off those sunglasses, and you'll see.

Oops, Ingrid said laughing, I guess we'll just paint some flames on it and call it a pumpkin on fire.

(LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: Very cute ending. Thank you, John, you got it right.

JOHN: Great.

FLATOW: Thanks for playing along with us.

JOHN: Thank you very much.

FLATOW: You're welcome. Have a happy new year.

JOHN: You too, bye.

FLATOW: It seems like you don't have to be a kid, Natalie, to enjoy playing these little games with the puzzles here.

YODER: Well, I hope not. I hope that people at all ages can enjoy them.

FLATOW: Yeah, and do you laugh at the things you see on TV sometimes, like I started out by talking about CSI and weird kinds of instruments they have that nobody has?

YODER: I'm actually a big fan of "CSI," but it's also cool to be able to write them and to know that children will be able to solve them.

FLATOW: Yeah, so when can we see the next book?

YODER: Well, we're working on it right now. We're thinking about doing something math-oriented again. But we have some other ideas, and we might try a different format the next time around. So it will be some time, but in the meantime, we're really happy that this book just came out, and it's, you know, now available along with the other two.

FLATOW: All right, thank you very much for taking time to be with us, and have a happy holiday.

YODER: Thank you.

The hottest real estate market for investors

In true Monday morning quarterback fashion the national media is recognizing what those of us in the real estate trenches have been saying since 2009: Houston is probably the hottest real estate market for real estate investors at the moment. And it is projected to retain that status for the foreseeable future in 2013. If you are skeptical of that strong statement, tell me, where else can you get the following combination of investing conditions: A rock solid local economy 1 percentage point away from full employment (5.8%), high rental demand, minimal vacancy rates and rising rental prices, price to rent ratios on new (or less than 6 yrs old) properties under 8 and a steady and reliable local real estate market in full bloom? Not to mention that Texas is one of the most landlord friendly states with no state income tax that?s responsible for more job creation nationwide than most other states combined. There are other locations that do offer some of the benefits I just mentioned to investors but none that offer them all, like Texas.

Lately, I?m getting calls from investors who seem eager to engage in some ?amnesia investing? ? that?s when an investor forgets what just happened in that market just a few years ago and wants to risk his money in a location where history is sure to repeat itself. Examples? There are the usual suspects: Florida, Vegas, California and the like. Because prices there are off a gazillion percent from the utterly ridiculous highs of 2006. Here?s a piece of advice for you: Don?t fall for it. The price to rent ratios are still out of whack in every single one of those locations. In those markets, the fundamentals haven?t changed one bit and what?s puffing them up now is exactly the same culprit that did it last time. It?s merely the investors? expectation that prices are due to rise without any real economic underpinnings. Before you invest your hard earned capital in one of those markets ask yourself this: If the property you are buying would be worth exactly the same 10 years from now, would you still buy it? The answer is no and the only thing that makes that investment remotely plausible is the speculation of rising property values. Hoping to catch the wave on the way up is not a good investment strategy and there are droves of investors that discovered why just a few short years ago. What is a good strategy? Invest in a market where solid economics drives demand and returns aren?t dependent on price appreciation to get your goals accomplished. Invest in the real estate market that?s one of the hottest in the country for the right reasons.

Drink Recipe: Hibiscus Ginger Punch Recipes from The Kitchn | The ...

2012_12_20-hibiscus1.jpgMost punch recipes cater to a single crowd: drinkers or non-drinkers. This one is delicious either way. Whether you fizz it up with champagne or mineral water, hibiscus ginger punch will put a colorful sparkle in your celebrations.

2012_12_20-hibiscus2.jpg

When I started dreaming of a festive punch, I initially considered cranberry or pomegranate but, frankly, I was a bit tired of these ingredients, which appear in every other beverage this time of year. Instead, I turned to a holiday tradition from Jamaica, where a drink called "sorrel" is made from hibiscus blossoms. Throughout the world, dried hibiscus or roselle is steeped in water to make crimson-colored tisanes, juices, and punches, and in Jamaica especially the hibiscus is combined with ginger for a tart and pleasantly spicy beverage.

To make this punch, I mixed a rich hibiscus and ginger base with ginger ale and then either champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water. For the non-alcoholic version I recommend using a true mineral water (like Perrier) rather than other carbonated waters. Its subtle mineral flavor and more delicate bubbles are a sophisticated substitute for the alcohol. But use any fizzy water that works for you.

On the subject of substitutions, what if you can't find dried hibiscus blossoms (also known as "flor de jamaica" in Latin American markets)? Try making a strong brew with hibiscus tea bags; Celestial Seasonings and The Republic of Tea are two widely available brands.

2012_12_20-hibiscus4.jpg

Hibiscus Ginger Punch

Serves about 12

4 1/2 cups water
1 cup dried hibiscus blossoms
2-inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced
1 cup sugar
4 cups chilled ginger ale
2 750-mL bottles chilled champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water
Optional: ice, garnishes of mint, lemon or lime slices

Combine water, hibiscus blossoms, and ginger in a pot. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in sugar. Let cool, strain, and chill. (If you like, save some of the plumped-up hibiscus blossoms for garnish.)

To make punch, stir hibiscus juice with ginger ale and champagne or mineral water. Garnish if desired and serve immediately.

Health & Fitness Solutions: Information Regarding Acupuncture ...

If they intend to undergo acupuncture Laramie patients should first ensure that they get as much information as possible on the technique. This will help them decide whether or not this procedure is beneficial to them. Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which cure is achieved through the use of numerous needles inserted in various points in the body. It is treatment modality that has been in existence in China for thousands of years.

The treatment uses some special needles that are inserted into the body. Needles used in the treatment are manufactured from stainless steel. Their length is variable (13 to 130 mm) and so is the diameter (0.16 mm to 0.46 mm). According to practitioners, the needles stimulate specific points in the body and help life energy to flow. Their belief is that diseases are the result of disruption in this energy. Each point is said to be connected to several others using channels.

There is scientific evidence that suggests that the procedure may have some effect on some types of pain as well as nausea. It is difficult to conduct enough studies to make a comprehensive conclusion due to the invasive nature of the procedure. In spite of the scanty evidence, a number of authorities such as the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health in the US and the National Health Service (UK) have all endorsed the use acupuncture for treatment of selected conditions but this has been met by criticisms from some scientists.

In using the treatment the patient is first taken through the process of history taking and physical examination in order first make the diagnosis. This is followed by the location of specific points to be used for insertion of needles. It is believed that these points are located within the meridians whose flow of energy has been disrupted.

Acupuncture is sought for three main functions. These include prevention, treatment and promotion of well-being. It is frequently used alongside other therapies both in mainstream medicine and in alternative medicine. Currently it augments other modalities in treatment of somatic disorders involving the digestive, reproductive, respiratory and neuromuscular systems. It has been tried in a number of emotional and mental conditions.

In preparing for the treatment, there are a number of guidelines that must be followed. For instance, one should not eat a large meal several hours before or after the procedure. Intense physical exercises including sexual activity should also be avoided. Adequate rest after treatment is strongly recommended and one must ensure that they take all the prescribed medication.

There are a number of other fields closely related to acupuncture. One of such fields is known as acupressure. In this procedure, hands are used to effect treatment instead of needles. Moxibustion, a fairly old treatment modality involves burning of mugwort weeds close to the meridians. Sonopuncture (or acutonics) involves body stimulation of the body using sound generated either through ultrasound machines or tuning forks.

A numbing sensation is the commonest feeling that is experienced by persons undergoing the therapy. There may also be some pain and distension which spreads along the path of the meridian. Some experts use this as confirmatory sign that the treatment is working. Things that may go wrong include insertion of needles to a wrong depth, improperly done manipulation and bleeding at the needle site among others. If interested in undergoing acupuncture Laramie residents may need to talk to their physicians first to get a professional opinion.

Autism and the special, special education | EDB-NEWS - uaivuv's ...

The burials began Monday, Dec. 17, just three days after evil rained down upon Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. On Saturday, Dec. 22, just two days before many of the massacred would have, should have, celebrated Christmas Eve with their families, the last of all 26 innocent victims were laid to rest in peace ? their souls bound up in the bonds of eternal life.

Sandy Hook Funeral Home, Newtown, Connecticut

Twenty-six souls ? 20 of them forever 6 and 7 years old ? lost amidst a haze of gunfire, gunpowder and violence. Within minutes, they were gone. Within hours of hearing that their loved ones had perished, families, still in the throes of denial and anger, began to compose stories of their loved ones. These were based upon the Pulitzer Prize?winning New York Times "Portraits of Grief" section, which was created in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The profiles were "stories, anecdotes, tiny but telling details that seemed to reveal something true and essential about how each person lived.... The profiles... were closer to snapshots ? concise, impressionistic, their power at least as much emotional as intellectual. And, they were utterly democratic." And yet, "each profile is only a snapshot, a single still frame lifted from the unrecountable complexity of a lived life."*

Like an onion, layer by layer the stories and faces of the Sandy Hook School victims came into focus. And, like an onion, each individual story brought tears to our collective eyes as we learned about each person unfairly robbed of the chance to reach his or her full potential and each family robbed of helping make those dreams a reality. We learned about the child who wanted to be a firefighter... the teacher who hid students in the closet... the boy who idolized the New York Giants... the teacher who idolized the Miami Dolphins... the girl whose mother finally allowed her to wear her favorite dress to school that fateful day... the boy who enjoyed playing baseball with his dad... the extraordinarily smart and cute boy gunned down, while his twin sister survived... the first-grade boy with special needs found cradled in the arms of his special education aide, who also died as she tried to shield him from harm.

Dylan Hockley and Anne Marie Murphy

Sandy Hook Memorial, Newtown, Connecticut

The. First. Grade. Boy. With. Special. Needs. Found. Cradled. In. The. Arms. Of. His. Special. Education. Aide. Dylan Christopher Jack Hockley, age 6, and his special education aide Anne Marie Murphy, age 52, entered into eternity together. Like Dylan, whose family lives 20 minutes from my own, my son is a first grader with autism spectrum disorder. Like Dylan, my son is in a typical classroom and has a one-on-one aide by his side. And my heart and soul believe that Ethan's educators and paraprofessionals, as did Dylan's, would sacrifice their lives to protect his. There but for the grace of G-d go I...

Just as Anne Marie had loved and protected Dylan during his short life, she loved and protected him during what was, hopefully, a death without suffering.

"We take great comfort in knowing that Dylan was not alone when he died," his parents, Ian and Nicole Hockley, said.

They went on to say that "Dylan loved Mrs. Murphy so much and pointed at her picture on our refrigerator every day.... Though our hearts break for Dylan, they are also filled with love for these and the other beautiful women who all selflessly died trying to save our children.... We cannot speak highly enough of Dawn Hochsprung and Mary Sherlach , exceptional women who knew both our children and who specifically helped us navigate Dylan's special education needs.... Dylan's teacher, Vicki Soto , was warm and funny, and Dylan loved her dearly."

At Dylan's funeral, his mother told a story about asking Dylan why he sometimes flapped his arms, as some children with autism do. Given Dylan's limited language, she expected no answer. But Dylan surprised everyone when he said, "Because I am a beautiful butterfly."

Catching up

Outside, after Dylan's service, the mourners watched as Jake, Dylan's brother, released 26 symbolic balloons ? 20 purple for the children, six white for the adults. After a beat, another purple balloon was released, which drifted up to the others, in a proverbial game of catch up. You see, when you have a child with autism, you learn that your child's life will be one long symbolic pursuit of catching up.

A woman of valor

At Anne Marie Murphy?s funeral Mass, led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York said, "Annie's life and death bring light, truth, goodness and love to a world often shrouded in darkness, evil, selfishness and death."

Her Mass began with a reading from the Book of Proverbs : "She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.... Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.... Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise."

Even in death, Anne Marie will protect children with autism; her family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Autism Speaks.

"Annie's life and death bring light, truth, goodness and love to a world often shrouded in darkness, evil, selfishness and death"

Divine intervention

While the Hockley, Murphy and 24 other families mourn their loved ones, here I sit in my own home, blessed to faintly hear my son playing the piano in another room. I am moved and awed to hear him play Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," a song he's never played before. Perhaps Divine Intervention, or Anne Marie's and Dylan's spirits, are responsible. There is no logical way to explain how my son, out of the blue, plays a new song whose apropos lyrics talk about "a lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to show, how everything still turns to gold."

Surely, Anne Marie is the lady who shines light and goodness, as she continues to assure Dylan that everything will be all right. Except this time, Dylan no longer needs to be cradled in the safety of Anne Marie's loving arms. Now, Dylan truly is that beautiful butterfly he always wanted to be. And this time, when he flaps his wings, he can ascend the stairway to Heaven all by himself. He is, after all, a butterfly. And butterflies are free.

Postscript

Throughout the year, especially during the holiday season and in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, my husband and I would like to recognize and thank the Anne Marie Murphys in our world, our very own "Women of Valor." Their love and light protects Ethan every way, every day.

East Naples family spends first Christmas in Habitat home

EAST NAPLES, Fla - An East Naples family has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

For the first time ever they will wake up Christmas morning and have a place to call home. It's all thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Collier County.

For the Cyriaque family, this Christmas is extra special and full of firsts. Inelda and her daughters Zyan, 13, and Lyana, 7, are putting up their first Christmas tree and it's going up in their first home.

"Sky is the limit. This is like a dream," says Inelda Cyriaque. "I've been smiling. I haven't stopped smiling."

The road to homeownership hasn't been easy for Inelda, but she has never given up.

"I was a teen mom at 16," says Cyriaque. "From there I just had a goal in mind to not become a statistic."

While living in Miami, Zyan became sick with a bacterial fungus and Inelda lost her job. "That was rock bottom for me," says Cyriaque. "I was like, we're leaving."

With $100 in her pocket, she packed the kids and everything she owned into this car and came across Alligator Ally. That was in August of last year and now, she's a homeowner.

"Even my mom said she was proud of me," says Cyriaque. "Even after all these years. I'm proud of you, wow."

Inelda went back to school, graduated, got a new job and now a new home. "It's great," says Zyan. "Our first actual home that we don't have to move anymore and finally I get my own room."

This is all made possible because of Habitat for Humanity of Collier County. "They've moved three times in one year and now to be celebrating Christmas, in their forever home is very exciting," says Lisa Lefkow, executive vice president of development at Habitat for Humanity of Collier County. ?

"God puts certain people in your path to guide you," says Cyriaque. "everything happens for a reason."

Habitat for Humanity of Collier County has been serving families since April of 1978. Since then they have built more than 1,400 homes.

(AP) ? More messages of hope and solidarity poured into Newtown on Monday as the town prepared to observe Christmas Eve 10 days after the elementary school massacre that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and six teachers and administrators.

Two dozen children and six adults arrived at town hall in the morning to deliver hundreds of handmade cards and snowflakes collected as they toured the state in a charter bus.

One of the organizers, Gwen Samuel of Meriden, said "we just want them to know they're not alone in their journey."

The effort was intended to give Connecticut children a chance to express their feelings about the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Police say 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother before going on the shooting rampage, then committed suicide. If they know why he shot his way into the school and gunned down 26 people, they have not said.

In the week since the shooting, messages similar to the ones delivered Monday have poured into Newtown from all over the world. People have donated toys, books, money and more.

"We know that they'll feel loved. They'll feel that somebody actually cares," said 15-year-old Treyvon Smalls of Middlebury, a few towns away from Newtown. "It gives us all a chance to speak out."

As Treyvon and the students traveling with him delivered their notes, another group of roughly two dozen people met in the town hall auditorium for a prayer service that was as much therapy session as religious gathering. Attendees expressed their sorrow and fears and looked to each other for support as they talked about what happened.

The town hall has become a gathering point for those dropping off donations and in need of a place to congregate and find comfort in one another. A "'peace tree" created out of a log and adorned with a heart-shaped wreath, numerous peace signs and Christmas decorations sit in front of the town hall steps, where a large banner proclaims, "Together we birth a culture of peace."

Karen Pierce, one of the town hall's elected building managers, has been helping accept the deluge of donations and expressions of support that have been coming in all week.

"We've had people from all over the country. It is incredible, it's heartwarming, it's overwhelming. It's invigorating and exhausting," she said. "It's so uplifting and I believe that's what's been getting people through."

The town has been so inundated with donations for children that Pierce said she has redistributed some to other children dropping off their own notes and donations, saying that with their acts of kindness they too have qualified to be children of Newtown.

On Monday, she gave each of the children dropping off cards a golden stuffed monkey. She chose gold, she said, because it symbolizes a new dawn that everyone needs.

"At the same time we have this outpouring and we want to make sure we give respect for every phone call, every card, every gift, every flower, every kind word," she said. "And so that's one of the things that everyone in the community is trying to do is make sure while people are honoring us, that's the big question, how do you say to the world 'Thank you?'"

Later Monday, people throughout Newtown were expected to light luminaries outside in memory of those killed.

The idea was hatched by Nicole Russo of Fairfield, who has two nephews who attend Sandy Hook Elementary School and were unharmed. She decided to bring her neighborhood's Christmas tradition of lighting the way for Santa to Newtown.

"My husband and I were saying we feel so helpless, you know, we're 30 miles away and we're helpless," she said.

After a group of her friends got together and started a 'Luminaries of Love' outreach campaign, about 40,000 bags were donated for their project, with Yankee Candle donating 10,000 candles.

The free bags and candles were quickly scooped up on Sunday in a couple of hours with many people offering cash donations that could help fund the project in the future.

"I want to do it every year," Russo said. "We don't ever want to forget."
