coeNEWS: Students learn about language, culture in Costa Rica

Video: COE students talk about course?s impact

University of Georgia student Chandler Fortson, a senior from Jackson majoring in early childhood education, was looking for a study-abroad course to take last summer that would really benefit her in her future career.

?There are not many that are relevant to my major and as soon as I read the description of the Language and Culture Service Learning course, I knew it was just what I was looking for,? said Fortson, who is considering becoming an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher. ?I am taking three additional classes to get my ESOL endorsement to broaden my teaching scope and cultivate my interest and belief in providing an education that is compatible to each individual student.?

Now, in its seventh year, the month-long course runs from early July to August. It is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. During that month, the students explore through reflections, discussions and theoretical readings the nexus between language and culture and the issues involved in teaching ESL, according to Paula Mellom, co-director of the program and a research scientist in UGA?s Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education, based in the College of Education.

Fortson works with a Whitehead Road Elmentary School student on some mathematics problems. Photo by Michael Childs

As part of the service-learning component, the UGA students apply what they are learning in a week-long ?English Camp? for local elementary school children. The students develop interactive lessons that integrate the national science curriculum and apply strategies for teaching English to non-native speakers of English.

In addition to their classwork, students work with local farmers and a local women?s cooperative. They also live with a home-stay family for a week.

Most of the course is at the UGA Costa Rica campus and surrounding communities, but they also travel to Turrialba in the Atlantic zone and finish out the trip at Playa Samara, one of Costa Rica?s coastal jewels in the Guanacaste region, according to Mellom.

?The program provided me with the means to truly step out of my comfort zone whether it was zip-lining through the rainforest and white-water rafting in the Pacuare River or living with an unknown Spanish-speaking family for a week,? said Fortson, who decided to study early childhood education during her senior year in high school.

?My home stay with a local family in Monteverde for a week was what made me the most nervous about my time in Costa Rica initially. I had no idea what to expect and because of this, I worried and worried until I stepped out of the taxi onto the Leitons driveway and saw my home-stay father?s and brother?s smiling faces,? said Fortson.

The part of the trip that worried her the most, turned out to be the experience that had the greatest impact on her views. While it was difficult communicating at times because her Spanish was not great, Mellom had asked the family to speak to Fortson only in Spanish.

Fortson talks about her Costa Rican experience

?I would have never guessed that I?d wake up one night only to realize in confusion that I had been dreaming in Spanish and was now thinking in Spanish even after waking up from my dream,? said Fortson. ?I gained my own family in Costa Rica. I was able to truly experience the language and culture of Costa Rica and gain even more respect for the differences and similarities of cultures other than my own.?
Fortson, who completed two semesters of practicum in two different Clarke County elementary schools this past year, will complete her student teaching through the COST (Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching) program this fall, in Quito, Ecuador.

Fortson will graduate in December 2012, but beyond that she?s unsure of her career path. She is planning to attend graduate school in some aspect of education.

But one thing of which she is sure is that she will be well-prepared for the challenges she may face as an educator.

?The Early Childhood Education program at UGA has given me an awareness of the many everyday issues in our school systems,? she said. ?And the experiences of Costa Rica allow me to teach and observe with more of an ethnographic perspective ? truly being able to understand that each and every student comes from a different background and to be accepting of this.?

Space is still available in this year?s program, for more information, visit:

'Dogs in the City' Premiere And More Summer TV Shows About Dogs

LOS ANGELES ? Summer television used to mean reruns. This year it's gone to the dogs.

Several new shows star dogs and their owners in need of help. CBS has the lone network show in "Dogs in the City," starring comic, dog trainer and businessman Justin Silver. It's joined by documentaries on PBS and HBO and a series in the works for the Disney Channel, among others.

Each Wednesday at 8 p.m., beginning May 30, Silver will try to help hound and human tackle unsettling problems like joint custody after divorce or dealing with significant others who just moved in.

Is man or mutt usually to blame for problems? It's 50-50, he said, but "a dog's behavior is shaped by the people in its life."

Silver says he won't be the one solving problems, even though he jokes that he speaks dog. Instead he will provide techniques and experiences so owners can fix their own problems.

"It's that old adage: Give a man a fish and you'll fill his belly. Teach him how to fish and he'll never starve. I am teaching you how to fish. But no one learns how to fish perfectly in one hour. It takes constant practice."

If intervention is needed, he will call on his own pit bulls, Chiquita and Pacino. "I use my dogs as much as possible because the thing that influences dogs most is other balanced dogs," he said.

"Dogs in the City" seems to have a lot in common with "The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" on the National Geographic Channel and "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stilwell on Animal Planet. "Bad Dog!" is another Animal Planet show, although it uses videotape to capture misbehavior in a test of sorts to see how far an owner's love will stretch.

Documentaries airing in May and June explore the rewards and redemption of shelter dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says between 5 million and 7 million companion animals enter shelters every year and between 3 million and 4 million of them are euthanized.

"Shelter Me," a PBS documentary, is narrated by actress Katherine Heigl and is sponsored by the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres.

It follows an animal control officer, adoption workers, female inmates who train rescue dogs, and vets who acquire former shelter dogs.

"`Shelter Me' is about the lives that are changed when shelter pets are given a second chance," Heigl said.

Andrew J. Trotto, an Army veteran from Mission Viejo, was teamed up with Teka, a black Lab rescued from a Wyoming shelter by Freedom Service Dogs in Englewood, Colo.

"If it wasn't for her, I'd be dead right now," Trotto says in the film.

"I was an evil person. I hated you or wanted to kill you," he said, describing the PTSD demons that haunted him. "People say suicide is selfish. But when you are in the zone, you're not thinking about that. The terror in your head drives you insane. She (Teka) will wake me up out of my night terrors."

"Shelter Me" will air across the country in late May and June.

HBO will premiere a documentary called "One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal" on June 18 at 9 p.m.

The film looks at America's obsession with dogs, how far individuals will go for their pets and what it will take for people across the country to treat all dogs humanely.

The 73-minute documentary looks at the odds stacked against shelter dogs, spay and neuter education, puppy mills, dog bite victims and how some owners respond when their dog attacks.

The Disney Channel also has a new dog show in the works for the fall and while it does involve a rescue dog, that's where reality ends.

The live-action, multi-camera series called "Dog With A Blog" and revolves around a dog named Stan (who is really a 4-year-old named Kuma).

In real life, Kuma is a husky, golden retriever and border collie mix who was rescued from a shelter. In the show, he is adopted to tame a pair of feuding stepbrothers. Turns out Stan can read, write and blog.

Antimatter-Powered Supernovae (preview)

The largest stars die in explosions more powerful than anyone thought possible?some triggered in part by the production of antimatter

Highest-energy supernovae might look quite spectacular from a planet orbiting the exploding star, but any civilization would most likely be obliterated. Image: Illustration by Ron Miller

In Brief

  • In recent years several supernovae have turned out to be more powerful and long-lasting than any observed before.
  • Archival images showed that the stars that gave rise to some supernovae were about 100 times as massive as the sun: according to accepted theory, stars this big were not supposed to explode.
  • Some supernovae may have been ther?mo?nuclear explosions triggered by the creation of pairs of particles of matter and antimatter.
  • The first generation of stars in the universe, which created the materials that later formed planets, may have exploded through a similar mechanism.

In the middle of 2005 the W. M. Keck observatory on Mauna Kea in Hawaii completed an upgrade of one of its giant twin telescopes. By automatically correcting for atmospheric turbulence, the instrument could now produce images as sharp as those from the Hubble Space Telescope. Shrinivas Kulkarni of the California Institute of Technology urged young Caltech researchers?myself among them?to apply for observing time. Once the rest of the astronomy community realized how terrific the telescopes were, he warned us, securing a slot would become very competitive.

Taking this advice, I teamed up with my then fellow postdocs Derek Fox and Doug Leonard to attempt a type of study that previously had been carried out almost solely with the Hubble: hunting for supernova progenitors. In other words, we wanted to know what stars look like when they are about to explode.

Arctic-sea oil exploration stands to open new frontier

By JOHN M. BRODER and CLIFFORD KRAUSS

POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, May 24, 2012

WASHINGTON >> Shortly before Thanksgiving in 2010, the leaders of the commission President Barack Obama had appointed to investigate the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico sat down in the Oval Office to brief him.

After listening to their findings about the BP accident and the safety of deepwater drilling, the president abruptly changed the subject.

?Where are you coming out on the offshore Arctic?? he asked.

William K. Reilly, a former chief of the Environmental Protection Agency and a commission co-chairman, was startled, as was Carol M. Browner, the president?s top adviser at the time on energy and climate change. Although a proposal by Shell to drill in the Arctic had been a source of dissension, it was not a major focus of the panel?s work.

?It?s not deep water, right?? the president said, noting that Shell?s proposal involved low-pressure wells in 150 feet of water, nothing like BP?s 5,000-foot high-pressure well that blew out in the gulf.

?What that told me,? Reilly later recounted, ?was that the president had already gotten deeply into this issue and was prepared to go forward.?

Barring a successful last-minute legal challenge by environmental groups, Shell will begin drilling test wells off the coast of northern Alaska in July, opening a new frontier in domestic oil exploration and accelerating a global rush to tap the untold resources beneath the frozen ocean. It is a moment of major promise and considerable danger.

Industry experts and national security officials view the Alaskan Arctic as the last great domestic oil prospect, one that over time could bring the country a giant step closer to cutting its dependence on foreign oil. But many Alaska Natives and environmental advocates say drilling threatens wildlife and pristine shorelines, and perpetuates the nation?s reliance on dirty fossil fuels.

In blessing Shell?s move into the Arctic, Obama continues his efforts to balance business and environmental interests, seemingly project by project. He pleased environmentalists by delaying the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada and by adopting tough air standards for power plants, yet he has also delighted business concerns by rejecting an ozone standard deemed too costly to the economy.

And now, the president is writing a new chapter in the nation?s unfolding energy transformation, in this case to the benefit of fossil fuel producers.

?We never would have expected a Democratic president ? let alone one seeking to be ?transformative? ? to open up the Arctic Ocean for drilling,? said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club.

Shell?s Arctic quest has consumed seven years and $4 billion over two presidential administrations.

Other oil companies are already lining up to join Shell in the Arctic, which company executives say could eventually yield a million barrels a day of crude ? or more than 10 percent of current domestic output. Among the Inupiat who live closest to the proposed drilling, the project continues to generate tension and debate. Although they depend on oil production for jobs and tax revenue, they rely on the ocean for much of their food and culture.

?I?m worried because we live off the ocean, the bowhead whale, the beluga, the walrus, the bearded seal,? said Tommy Olemaun, president of the Native Village of Barrow, an Eskimo tribal organization. ?The ocean is our garden.?

The natural world holds a mystical grip on the nearly 5,000 Eskimos of the North Slope, where the migration patterns of the bowhead whale dictate the rhythm of life. All other activity stops when the Inupiat load up their sealskin boats with gun-fired harpoons. Whale meat is carved at the beach and shared among the community along with mythical tales of whales giving up their freedom to nourish the people.

Bow-shaped whale skulls are displayed in front of public buildings, and baleens ? the bristly plates that filter krill in the whale?s mouth ? as trophies in offices and homes.

In early April, Roy Nageak, 60, a whaling captain, got off his snowmobile and climbed a high ice ridge four miles offshore in search of a navigable hunting trail. ?Those oil guys can think whatever they want, but we know how harsh this ocean is,? he said. ?They don?t know what they are getting into.?

But the Eskimos have also come to rely on the oil industry. Before onshore drilling began in the 1960s, many North Slope communities lacked running water and relied on kerosene lanterns for light. Residents chopped ice on nearby lakes and transported it by dog sled to preserve their food. There were no high schools or fire stations.

Since the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in the late 1970s, the North Slope has produced as much as one-fifth of the nation?s oil, and taxes on the industry finance the North Slope Borough government?s $350 million annual budget. Over the past 50 years, nearly all of Alaska?s prosperity has been driven by oil production and crude prices. Residents pay no state income tax, and in fact receive checks ? totaling roughly $5,000 for a family of four last year ? from the Alaska Permanent Fund, a corporation largely financed by oil revenues.

But the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 had changed attitudes, especially among villagers. They feared that drilling would disturb the bowhead migration, forcing the whales away from their food and their pursuers dangerously far offshore. They also feared a spill could poison the whales.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster on April 20, 2010, the worst offshore spill in U.S. history, shut down Shell?s drilling plans for the year, but barely slowed its lobbying campaign on the Arctic. In numerous White House meetings even at the height of the gulf crisis, top Shell officials pressed for a decision.

After the flow from the stricken well was stanched in July, Obama focused on when to restart offshore drilling and whether to expand it. A month before the BP disaster, the administration had proposed opening new areas to drilling off the East and Gulf Coasts as well as Alaska.

The company?s plans were set back again at the end of December 2010 when an EPA panel revoked the air pollution permit for one of its drilling rigs. The EPA action effectively stopped Shell?s plans for another year, but the president put his foot on the gas.

In May 2011, he authorized onshore oil lease sales in Alaska?s National Petroleum Reserve and extended oil companies? offshore leases in the Arctic Ocean. In July, he created by executive order a multiagency task force led by the deputy interior secretary but overseen by Heather Zichal, an environmental adviser to the 2008 Obama campaign, to prod the bureaucracy on Arctic issues, particularly Shell?s drilling plans.

Still, some government officials complained that there remained huge gaps in response plans for a spill and too many unknowns about the effect of drilling on marine animals.

At the urging of regulators, Shell strengthened spill prevention and response plans. It built a containment system for the Arctic modeled on the one that successfully capped the BP well and added ships and equipment to the armada to be in place to capture any spilled oil. The company agreed reluctantly to shorten its Chukchi Sea drilling season by 38 days, to less than three months, to ensure that the area would be ice-free in case of a blowout.

The government strengthened its Arctic research programs to better understand the impact of increased industrial activity in the northern ocean. Those and other concessions seemed to placate officials at the permitting agencies, who were navigating between their regulatory duties and the president?s obvious desire to drill.

Shell?s permits came in a rush. Interior approved exploration in both seas by last December. Response plans were endorsed in February and March of this year. The EPA?s appeals board cleared the final air permits at the end of March ? just as the whaling season got under way. NOAA came through with a marine mammal permit in early May.

?We can?t stop it,? said one senior agency official who had qualms about Arctic drilling but understood the president?s wishes. ?We can only make it less bad.?

Shell is awaiting its final drilling permits from the Interior Department. Two Shell ships are in Seattle, undergoing final modifications and inspections.

(AP) ? Luke Donald held off Justin Rose to win the BMW PGA Championship for the second straight year Sunday and overtake Rory McIlroy for the No. 1 ranking.

Donald won by four strokes after starting the fourth round at Wentworth with a two-stroke lead. He shot a 4-under 68 to finish at 15 under. Sharing second place at the European Tour's flagship event were Rose (70) of England and fast-closing Paul Lawrie (66) of Scotland.

This was Donald's second victory of the year, following the Transitions Championship in the United States in March.

"It gives me a great amount of satisfaction," said Donald, who first rose to No. 1 after beating Lee Westwood in a playoff at this tournament last year. "To go a whole year and still be No. 1, I feel very fortunate right now."

This is the fourth time Donald has been ranked. No. 1. It's the sixth change at the top of the rankings in 12 weeks between Donald and Ryder Cup teammate McIlroy.

McIlroy missed the cut at Wentworth after a second-round 79. Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion, birdied the last hole to finish alone in fourth place after a 71, with Branden Grace (70) a shot further back in fifth.

Donald not only earned $950,000 with the victory but got a big boost leading to next month's U.S. Open in San Francisco, where he will go for his first major title.

"I feel I am getting closer. Every time I get a success like this, it adds to my confidence. These victories are key to bringing that confidence to the majors," the 34-year-old Englishman said.

Rose drew even for the lead after a birdie on No. 4 while Donald made his only bogey of the round on the same hole. At that time, Ireland's Peter Lawrie and Paul Lawrie were within two shots after strong starts in sunny conditions, but Donald found another gear.

He picked up shots at Nos. 6 and 7 and a 30-foot birdie at No. 10 drew cries of "Luuuuke" from the gallery to give him a three-stroke cushion.

Rose ? looking for a victory that could have lifted him into the world's top five for the first time ? couldn't respond. Further birdied by Donald at Nos. 12 and 16 allowed him to stroll down the par-5 18th. He is the third player, after Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie, to win successive titles in this event.

Donald finished with four rounds under 70, a significant achievement given a tough course, especially on Saturday when winds reached 30 mph.

"I got the job done," he said.

ron - PR for SMEs | Website & Graphic Design based in Odiham ...

PR for Small Business ? what you need to know

Public Relations is often considered by many SME?s as the playing field for industry big hitters, but gaining media coverage, engaging in social media and networking doesn?t have to be complex, daunting or expensive.

PR is just another form of marketing with the same end objective: to drive the business forward and generate revenue.

But what exactly is it??

Unlike advertising, PR aims to gain media (print, online or broadcast) exposure without paying for it. It?s about creating brand awareness by influencing people and building relationships and perceptions.

Effective PR ensures people know who you are, and more importantly, that they?re talking about you. It establishes and maintains your reputation and when comments are negative, it?s the role of PR to change that.

Regardless of the size of your organisation, maintaining a solid reputation will ultimately influence the success and longevity of your business. PR is all about reputation which is arguably your biggest asset. In a competitive market it?s your reputation which singles you out, and PR enables you to reach out to people and build on that.

What does it involve??

PR involves many aspects of the marketing mix. Everything from securing media coverage with newsworthy content, to blogging and social media (Facebook and Twitter), through to networking and promotional events comes under the PR umbrella.

The aim is to communicate your brand and build a positive reputation amongst consumers.

How quickly will I see results??

Perhaps the question on every SME?s lips, but the honest truth is that PR is a long term strategy.

Essentially it?s about laying the groundwork so that people remember your brand, service or product and have a positive association with it. This in turn will influence their decision to purchase your product or employ your services.

The desired outcome of positive PR is that consumers will know and trust your brand and ultimately become regular and repeat customers.

How much is it going to cost??

For businesses on a shoestring marketing budget it would seem logical that someone within the company should take on the role of PR. We all know that in small businesses many hats can be worn at any one time! However the key to successful PR is maintaining engagement with your audience, internally and externally, which if neglected could end up costing you more money in the long term.

The good news is that effective PR doesn?t have to cost the earth. Understanding who you want to communicate with and the best way of doing this will ensure no time (or money) is wasted on barking up the wrong tree. It?s all about getting the basics right.

If you choose to outsource help by using a PR professional you gain the added benefit of someone who will know the most effective way of communicating your company values. They will have good links with the media, be brimming with ideas and offer a creative, targeted approach to growing your business.

Japan to Set Up Marine Energy, Offshore Wind Power Test Sites

Japan will set up test sites for marine energy and offshore wind power to increase the use of renewable sources following the nuclear disaster last year.

Applications will be sought from local administrations and the first group of test sites will be picked by March 2014, a task force on ocean policy headed by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said today in a statement. The nation is taking a cue from the European Marine Energy Center, a Scottish test facility for wave and tidal technologies, Yoshikiyo Ono, a cabinet secretariat official, said at a briefing today.

"Our country?s use of marine renewable energy is extremely limited and technology development is also far behind compared with Europe and the U.S.," the task force said. "Marine renewable energy is important for our future energy policy."

How to Have Healthy Dogs | Welcome to yossifadhliworld.com

The first question most people ask whenever they get a new dog is what to feed them. Scanning the labels of the most popular and best-selling commercial dog foods they can find at the grocery or the local pet food shop for ingredients that are safe to consume is their next step. Just because it?s the most expensive and most recommended by the top vets doesn?t mean it?s the best food to feed your dog with. It?s always best to give him what he needs and not what he wants.

Carnivorous by nature, dogs have short gastrointestinal tracts that are better suited for meat than anything else. Despite this, however, dogs have managed to survive on scraps or leftovers their humans give them and on a variety of foods as well. But then again, just because the dog is OK with it doesn?t mean it?s all we should give them. Because it is based on factors like the dog?s growth, level of activity and health, feeding him a healthy and balanced diet is considered a Science. It is never a good idea to feed your pets dog food whose reputation is based solely on hype, which was why the Hills Science diet was created.

This condition-specific, life stage pet food formula was first developed in the 1960s by the late Dr. Mark Morris Jr., whose father pioneered veterinary clinical nutrition when he was asked to create a specialized diet for a seeing-eye dog with kidney disease. A carefully formulated nutrition plan, according to Dr. Morris, can easily help dogs manage common health problems like gastrointestinal disorders, skin allergies, sensitive stomachs, diabetes and heart diseases. A dog?s diet should be a ratio of 50% veggies and 50% meat with some brown rice and whole grain wheat; this type of scientifically formulated diet offers more.

Offering a healthy balance of ingredients like protein for healthy muscles, bones and internal organs, brewer?s rice for energy and digestion, linoleic acid for a strong immune system and flaxseed for healthy hearts, skins and coats, is the greatest advantage the Hills Science diet Australia has to offer. Dogs get the best of both worlds and live happy, healthy and long lives to boot.

Auto Insurance ? Why Non-Car Owners Also Need It | Copys.biz

An auto insurance policy for non car owners? What for? Hold on tight because you?re in for a big surprise A car insurance policy is a smart move even if you don?t own a car if you fall into any of the situations I will talk about later in this article.

If your city has a dependable mass transit system, you will not need a personal car for your daily movements. Car rental services are always there to take care of those times you may need a car for private use.

Along with renting a car, you?ll also have to get an auto insurance cover for the rent period. These rental service sell such car insurance policies. A non-owner car insurance policy is, however, cheaper for you on the long run if you rent cars often. you won?t have to be buying short term insurance covers from rental companies.

If your friends and relatives know that you have an auto insurance policy they?ll be more likely to release their car to you than otherwise. if you are a car owner, who would you consider more responsible: The fellow who has a non-owner car insurance policy and the guy who doesn?t? if you show that you are very responsible, people prefer to deal with you.

Hold on. A non-owner auto insurance policy works within a certain rule. if an accident happens, your non-owner?s policy cannot take precedence over the car owner?s policy. It kicks in only if the car owner?s policy?s liability limit cannot take care of the damages caused. I think an example will help make this clearer.

Let?s say you had an accident with a borrowed car that resulted in damages that totaled $27,000. in spite of your non-owner?s policy, the car owner?s policy will be used if his/her liability limit is, say, $30,000. if, on the other hand, there is a deficit where the car owner?s policy cannot cover such damage, your non-owner?s policy will take care of the balance.

It is good that you know that irrespective of the type of auto insurance policy you intend to get, you can make a lot of savings by capitalizing on the disparity in car insurance rates. This can save you several hundred dollars or even much more. Moreover, it?s very ethical ? no shady deals here.

If the possibility of saving $1000 fascinates you, then take some time out to visit at least three insurance quotes site. All you?ll have to do is get and compare quotes. and, it will only take you about 5 minutes per site. Auto insurance quotes sites give quick, free non-obligatory quotes.

94% Marley

All Critics (88) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (82) | Rotten (5)

Marley is highly watchable, finely crafted legacy preservation - and it's either a white-washed sham or awesomely shaded.

It wants to show us the man behind the famous dreads, beatific smile and durable songs of love, hope and longing. In this task it succeeds admirably.

Sprinkled with riffs, concert footage and home videos, the family-authorized documentary does what the artist usually did: When in doubt, return to the beat.

Macdonald supplies some interesting and novel details about the musician's life and art, though the movie's narrative arc and documentary methods are totally predictable.

Bob Marley wrote the same song about 8,000 times, and the documentary "Marley" makes sure to include each version.

This is a life story worth telling, and "Marley" does it much justice. Marley may or may not have been perfect, but he was certainly fascinating.

Similarly, with 'Marley,' Macdonald provides some much needed context to the songs that have sold millions of copies throughout the world.

It is the work of a man with opinions, based on endless questioning and research.

Kevin Macdonald's "Marley" is worth sticking with, and not just for diehard fans who had "Get Up, Stand Up" emanating from their dorm room speakers all through college.

Bob Marley fanatics are going to treat this film like the Holy Bible.

Will get you up to speed regarding all things Marley.

For a movie this long, it's too bad there isn't more footage of Marley in performance, joyously bringing music to the world.

...likely as close as we'll ever come to a definitive film biography of this gnomic figure.

Macdonald effectively lets the talking heads and the music explain the longevity of Marley's appeal.

Recounts a short life that seemed to straddle worlds and eras, and perhaps the definitive portrait will never be filmed or written. Until it is, though, there's always the music.

A truly human portrait of an extraordinary life.

Marley is a terrific documentary. It goes beyond one figure, and captures the essence of life itself. The film is as infectious and spiritual as one of his songs.

Good documentaries make us want to know more about their subject. But great ones like Marley don't need to.

It's certainly comprehensive, even if -- at two and a half hours long -- not exactly concise.

If you'd asked me a month ago how Marley had died, I might have cluelessly suggested a drug overdose.

Chronicles the life and times of the first musical superstar from the third world to gain a global audience, with the reggae singer's posthumous Legend album selling some 25 million copies.

In the end, it's just good, comprehensive storytelling, a film that justifies the legend rather than hypes it.
