Aston Martin Lagonda SUV back on the agenda again | Car Advice

Lagonda premieres with first concept

The Aston Martin-owned Lagonda nameplate could again be back on the cards in an attempt by the British brand to tackle the ever-growing luxury SUV market.

The Lagonda SUV Concept (pictured above), first seen at the 2009 Geneva motor show, has been an on-again-off-again project for Aston Martin but with sales of the company?s flagship DBS sports car stagnating, the push to again revive the luxury SUV is stronger than ever.

British car magazine Autocar reports that Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez has pointed toward a resurrection of the Lagonda with a suggestion of an updated concept ?in the coming year?. The publication also sights a second Lagonda model, a luxury sedan, as being already discussed.

IHS Automotive analyst Colin Couchman told Autocar, ?The DBS sells in a global market segment that is struggling to rebound back ?to where it was, and that?s largely down to China.?

This trend of luxury GT cars failing to regain sales strength is part of why more supercar brands are following in the footsteps of the Porsche Cayenne and turning to high-end SUVs, which are proving popular around the world but particularly in markets such as China and Russia.

If a production Aston Martin Lagonda SUV eventuates, it would need to happen quickly to be able to join the fight against the likes of the?Lamborghini Urus, Bentley EXP 9F, and?Maserati Kubang.

The Maserati is due in 2013, with the Lamborghini and Bentley SUVs expected about a year later.
